Is it difficult to switch from a different instrument to the bassoon?
No. I have had students start on the clarinet and saxophone. Sometimes, they even continue to play those instruments during marching season and have no problem switching back and forth with the bassoon.
How often should we have lessons?
For beginner students, it is important to set up a consistent and frequent lessons (generally, a 1/2 hour works well). For advanced players, it is suggested that they have longer lessons, which also allows for some work with reed adjusting.
I can't read music/bass clef...
This isn't a problem at all, we work together on reading music as well as reading bass and tenor clef.
What equipment am I responsible for when playing the bassoon?
A minimum of two reeds (see my reeds page), water container, music, and notebook (to write fingerings, assignments, etc.)

Teaching Philosophy:
Private teaching is a rewarding experience because of the one on one interaction with students. As a teacher, my goal is to encourage students to express themselves and support them through all the technical and musical demands playing the bassoon entails. Because each student is an individual, I am flexible in my approach while explaining new concepts and I provide constructive and positive instructions.
I understand students are pulled between many activities and it is my hope that we work together to establish a consistent and thorough approach to practicing. My students participate in solo and ensemble, and I assign many technical etudes as well as duets that I play with my students. My students range from sixth grade through seniors in high school with different musical abilities and backgrounds and I very much look forward to working with you!
Together the student and I work on all the fundamentals:
- Posture
- Embouchure
- Tone
- Sound projection
- Rhythm Accuracy
- Dynamics
- Intonation
- Musicianship Concepts (which includes roles as a section player, chamber player...)
- Technique
- Phrasing
- Articulation
- Reed Adjusting

"If we were a medical school, and you were here as a med student practicing appendectomies, you'd take your work very seriously because you would imagine that some night at two AM someone is going to waltz into your emergency room and you're going to have to save their life. Well, my friends, someday at 8 PM someone is going to walk into your concert hall and bring you a mind that is confused, a heart that is overwhelmed, a soul that is weary. Whether they go out whole again will depend partly on how well you do your craft"
